I have a CPCL that is listed as running on 10:1 fuel mix. I blelieve that there is a conversion to make it 25:1. Is this correct? What is in the kit? If so how does it work? Where can I buy a kit here in Australia? Cheers John

Check your id numbers and see what year the motor was built. Anything over January 1978 can run on a 25-1 fuel mix using the 25-1 jet needle conversion. The motors built under jan-78 have different bearings and cant cope with 25-1 and will sieze up on you. The proper oil to run in a british seagull is 30 weight Sae engine oil. The thickness of the oil is to create crankcase pressure which is what a 2 stroke needs to run properly. Im trying out a new Biodegradable oil thats made by penrite. Its used in todays current model Vw diesel cars. But if you want you can just use any sought of 2 stroke outboard oil as long as its got a TCW-3 Approval on the bottle.

I don't get to wound up about going to 25:1 . I mostly run my motors flat out , so there is very little smoke any way .As bullet says you need oil to help create compression and lube the bushes , Really it depends on the carb you have and other factors but I run most of mine at 400ml to 5 litre or 12.5:1 , easy to mix , the other thing I will say there is a trend here to run 30 w engine oil it's cheaper and it works . I prefer 2 stroke outboard oil TCW-3 as bullet suggested best choice , I do not recommend other oils like the diesel one he uses because the seagull runs pretty cold and it's not hot enough to burn off all the additives they put in the oil which is designed for engines that operate at much hotter temps with no plugs and ends up doing more harm than good over time .

Hi everyone, Thank you for your replies and good advise. Our engine is November 1963 so it does require the 10:1 mix instead of the 25:1. I currently use Valvoline 2 stroke oil for all our other 2 stroke engine like mowers, edgers, outboards etc. This oil does conform to the TC-W3 standards. I have tried to get some SAE 30 oil recently for the gearbox in the Vintage tractor but it was unavailable in this district and told they could not get any in. (just lazy I think). In the end I had to use 15W - 40. So it is Valvoline to be used and mixed at 10:1. Thank you so much for your help and guidance in this matter.

Genuine Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine oil is SAE-30. It normally has it written across the front label. But what you are using now(valvoline) is really good

When I find a product or something I like I tend to stay with it. I can't remember how many years I have used the Valvoline 2 stroke oil but it gets a big work out around here, with the vintage mower collection that gets used all the time, a little Mercury outboard (sorry for swearing) plus a couple of old hit n miss stationary engines. I thought that the B&S oil was a straight SAE 30 but I needed 16 litres for the tractor gearbox and that was going to be pricey buying it in small quantities. Also living in Rural NSW makes it tricky to get somethings but oddly enough not others, so I settle for what I can get. Thanks for the 'heads up' though 1650bullet.
